Mr. Kenneth Roy McCallion

Kenneth Roy McCallion, born April 17, 1955, died January 14, 2018. He was the proud and loving father of Elizabeth and Alison, and devoted partner of Namjilmaa Saandar. He was also the father of Alexandra Laureate-Gabriel. Ken was born to Irene Phinney (deceased 2002) and adopted by his parents, William J. McCallion (deceased 1998) and Jean B. McCallion (née Bacon). He was eldest of four siblings; he is survived by Nancy, Douglas and Cheryl. He also had a half-brother, Alan Cowdery, a son of Irene Phinney, of whom he was fond. Ken earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University, followed by his Master of Arts degree in Psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (University of Toronto). He was first registered/licensed with the College of Psychologists in 1998 (Adolescent & Adult Forensic), then completed additional competencies in 2003 (Child & Adolescent Clinical Psychology, School Psychology) and 2014 (Adult Clinical Psychology.) He worked in various settings, including government, schools, and hospitals, prior to setting up his private practice in Toronto. He loved his work and was dedicated to his clients, often working late into the night and even taking time during family vacations to ensure that his clients received the best care possible. More recently, he lectured in clinical psychology at the Adler Graduate Professional School, where he felt especially at home in the academic setting. Ken loved the outdoors and volunteered with Camp Outlook (a canoe-tripping program for at-risk youth) while a student at Queen’s University. He renewed his connection and provided training to new “Outlookers” in recent years. The girls recall many a canoe trip with their father, where he was diligent in providing paddling instruction and teaching them songs at the campfire. He also loved swimming, cycling, running, and yoga, but these pursuits were curtailed in the last few years as his health concerns progressed. He continued to enjoy the Beaches Jazz Festival and listening to recordings of his all-time favorite musician, Stan Rogers. Namjilmaa was attentive and caring to the end. Ken was surrounded by his family when he passed away. A memorial service is planned for April 2018. Please contact Alison McCallion at alison918@live.ca for details.
