Mrs. Vivian Ruth Canning (nee Anton)

Vivian Ruth Canning (nee Anton) of Port Perry, at the age of 82, passed on April 30, 2017 of cancer at Port Perry Hospital. Vivian was a much-loved wife, mother, and grandmother. Vivian is pre-deceased by her husband, Fred. She was the second-oldest child of Edward and Tina Anton of Geraldton, Ontario, and leaves behind her siblings, Dorothy, Winston (Nancy), Carol (Andy) and Donna (Keith), and Fred’s siblings, Doreen (Harold), Barbara ( Art) and Jim (Glennis) in whose hearts she was a sister. She is survived by her children, David (Donna), Ed (Julie), and Lisa (Dave). Never have grandchildren been more loved and treasured by their Nana than Arielle, Saunder, Kayte, and Cy. Vivian grew up in Geraldton where her father operated a garage. She left home at the age of 18 to take a job as a bank teller in Winnipeg. Eventually she made her way to Bracebridge where she met Fred while working as a teller at the local bank and he was on temporary assignment with Bell Canada as a cable repairman. They were residents of Prince Albert/Port Perry for well over 50 years having arrived shortly after their marriage. Vivian and Fred were long-time members of the Kinsmen and Kinettes of Port Perry contributing to the community in a myriad of ways over decades. Vivian’s other interests included teaching Tole workshops, running ceramic classes in her basement, travelling in the RV with Fred and doing the card party circuit with her card ladies. Vivian was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League. When recalling Vivian, those who knew her will remember first her laughter, her smile, and her bright blue eyes. Vivian’s sense of humour was infectious. There were very few issues upon which Vivian did not have an opinion. Few things were as entertaining as a good argument. Her love for her family was always unconditional. Vivian’s family deeply appreciates the care provided by Dr. Kim Ferguson, whose diapers Vivian changed as a child, and the incredible nursing team at Port Perry Hospital. Vivian passed secure in the knowledge that she would see her Fred again. There was little time for goodbyes but Vivian only wanted to be remembered by the love and laughter.
