On January 14, 2022, our precious mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Adriana Daniels (nee Gilsing) passed away peacefully at the age of 91. She is reunited with her beloved husband Martin (2006). She leaves to mourn her children Antoinette (Chris), Henrietta (Mike), Michael (Patricia), grandchildren Michael, Martin, Andrea, Mathew and Justin, and great-grandchildren Dylan, Olivia and Mason. Mom was born in the Netherlands in 1930 and was the eldest of 11 children. She married her one and only love - Martin - in 1955, and a few years later immigrated to Canada with her husband and two small daughters. Although she lived most of her life in Canada, her heart was always in the Netherlands. She was known by her Canadian family and friends as “Janie” and by her Dutch family and friends as “Sjaantje”. In her younger years, mom loved to keep busy with needlework and always had a project on the go, whether it was a cross-stitch tablecloth or power knitting socks for family. She often donated her handmade booties and caps to local hospitals for newborn babies. She loved doing crossword and word search puzzles or enjoyed a good game of BINGO and cards. Weekends were spent in hockey arenas where she was the loudest cheerleader when watching her son play. Most important to her was spending time with her family, either sharing a meal, or simply sipping coffee and talking. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A year didn’t go by where either mom would visit family and friends in the Netherlands, or family and friends would visit Canada, but someone was always traveling over that large pond. No matter, you could be sure of a few things, those times spent together would be loud, full of laughter, cheer, and songs, but most of all memorable. Mom never complained about any illness in her life, but in her later years, she battled with advanced Alzheimer’s Disease. She was lovingly cared for, until the very end, at home by her daughters, Henrietta on weekdays, and Antoinette on weekends. There was nothing these two wouldn’t do to ensure mom received the best care, even though she no longer recognized them in recent years. Grandson Marty graciously did bedtime duties and would hold his nanny’s hand until she fell asleep each night. Mom gave us all her love, and was loved 10 fold in return. Due to covid restrictions, a private cremation and burial will take place with immediate family only. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, would be appreciated by the family.
