Sandra Morgan (nee Johnson)

April 30, 2022

SANDRA MORGAN (nee JOHNSON) 1943-2022 Mother, Daughter, Caregiver, Grandma, Computer Pioneer, Creative Force, Teacher, Unitarian “In the end, I figure it’s all about love,” said Sandra Morgan, more than once in her life. And you saw it in how she lived. Born in Montreal in 1943, Sandra grew up in Dorval before her family moved to Scarborough, ON, when she was 12. In the 60s, she worked in administration and marketing in the nascent computer industry and bought her first car, a red VW Beetle. After eight fulfilling years at work and marrying a fellow Honeywell employee, Sandra left (or rather was forced to leave – this was the 70s) when daughter Julia was born, followed by son Brian. As the kids grew up, Sandra contributed extensively as a school volunteer, a Beaver/Girl Guide leader and board member, and through numerous other volunteer roles in her Thornhill community. In the 80s as her marriage ended, she re-entered the workforce in the Training and Development department at Seneca College. When her mother Winnie began to develop Alzheimer’s, Sandra became a devoted caregiver and advocate for her, a journey that lasted 15 years. In the 90s she worked as a microcomputer instructor and fulfilled many lifelong dreams, such as taking art classes and excelling at a Master’s-level course in adult education at York University. She became a Unitarian in the mid-90s and began attending the Don Heights fellowship in 2000, where she was an active member for the rest of her life, attending services; developing and leading workshops; joining courses, fundraisers, and committees; and contributing for 20+ years as a member of the congregation’s Care Team. The 2010s brought her two beloved grandchildren, Kurt (Brian’s son) and Grace (daughter of “like a daughter” Cecilia); both grandkids filled her with joy, even while her health started to fail. Sandra will always be remembered for her generosity and caring, her creativity, her wonderful outspokenness and sense of humour, her humanist values, her courage in overcoming life’s struggles, and her love for family and nature. Thanks to the many health professionals who supported Sandra, the “C” girls, DH, and the Don Heights community. She is deeply missed by Brian, Kurt, Julia, Gracie, Cecilia, Peter, Bev and other cousins and relations, and many fine friends too numerous to mention. Predeceased and loved by her mother and maternal grandparents, her aunt Pat and uncle Johnny, and several dear cousins and friends including George Lee and Arthur Morgan. Sandra died in her 80th year on April 30, 2022. Donations to the Breakfast Club of Canada in her memory are appreciated (https://give.breakfastclubcanada.org/feeding-hungry-children-and-youth-across-canada-sandra-morgan-legacy-project) - the issue of child hunger and poverty in Canada moved and concerned Sandra greatly. A future Celebration of Life will be held for Sandra; please email [email protected] if you would like to be notified about it when details are available, or to reach the family for any reason.
